President Peter Mutharika’s frequent and unexplained journeys to South Africa have intensified questions about his health, as opposition leaders press for evidence that he remains fit to govern.
Political analyst George Phiri has sought to ease those concerns, saying Malawi’s Constitution provides established procedures for transferring power should the need arise.

Phiri nevertheless noted that the country has no sufficiently strong legal provisions requiring public officials to reveal the president’s precise medical condition.
The government offered no explanation for Mutharika’s latest trip to South Africa, adding to the growing public scrutiny.
