Kenneth Kaunda buried in Chiefs’ Cemetery

In Zambia, the Supreme Court rejects the appeal lodged by one of Kenneth Kaunda’s sons in his waiver to the government over the location of the funeral of the father of independence. The judge decided to authorize the funeral of Kenneth Kaunda on Wednesday, July 7, in the cemetery of the former heads of state, in Embassy Park, opposite the government seat. The day before, family members had requested that he be buried with his wife.

In a letter, the High Court judge said he understood the motive of Kenneth Kaunda’s family for wanting a private ceremony. But add that the public interest must prevail. So it’s a public ceremony was held on Wednesday, July 7, in Lusaka Cathedral in the presence of President Edgar Lungu, dignitaries and opposition members.

And it is in the cemetery for former heads of state thatthe father of independencewas buried, according to the wishes of the government, but against those of part of his family.

His son Kawecha had indeed appealed on Tuesday to demand that his father be buried with his wife Betty Kaunda, finally appealed the appeal. But Kenneth Kaunda’s youngest son, Tilyenji, still wants to believe it. According to him, there should be two funerals. Funeral Wednesday at Presidential Square and Thursday or Friday, excavation then new burial at the family cemetery at State Lodge.

The government chose the Supreme Court’s decision without taking into account the family’s various complaints.
