Up to 300 people a day are arriving at the Malawian consulate in Johannesburg, seeking transport home after escaping anti-immigrant violence in South Africa. Daily arrivals have ranged between 100 and 300.

Those who spoke to GroundUp said they had come from across Johannesburg, the East Rand, and even the Free State. Many reported sleeping outside the consulate for several days as they waited for buses.
