Redson Munlo, a well-known human rights campaigner, has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament who he says are plotting to lengthen their time in office without public approval. In an audio message circulated recently, Munlo accused lawmakers of holding clandestine meetings to prepare a resolution that would push their tenure from the constitutionally mandated five years to seven.
“According to the Constitution, MPs are elected to represent the people for only five years. They should not give themselves powers to extend that term. This issue requires a referendum,” he said, urging legislators not to follow the example of Zimbabwe, where President Emmerson Mnangagwa won parliamentary support for measures that effectively extended his period in power.
