Enhancing Security: Somaliland and Ethiopia Forge Partnership for Police Training Initiative

Hargeisa (AX) – Somaliland and Ethiopia have inked a pact in Addis Ababa, in which Ethiopia will provide training for new police units in Somaliland.

A post on the Somaliland Police Force’s Facebook page revealed on Thursday that Deputy Commissioner General Mesfin Abebe, President of the Ethiopia Police University, and Gen. Abdi Ahmed Tiir, head of training for the Somaliland Police Force, signed the agreement for police training.

However, specific details about the deal were not disclosed.

The agreement came after a recent visit by Somaliland Police Chief Mohamed Aden Saqadhi to Ethiopia, where he met with the Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner.

In January, Ethiopia and Somaliland struck a controversial deal granting Ethiopia access to the sea via a 20-kilometer coastal strip in Somaliland. Mogadishu denounced the agreement as “illegitimate”, citing concerns over sovereignty and neighborly relations.
