Mogadishu (AX) — Somali intelligence forces said they killed 19 al-Shabab members, including a senior operative, during two coordinated operations in the Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions on Monday.
Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency said international partners supported the operations.
The first operation targeted the Geel-gub area near Ali Gaduud Mosque in Middle Shabelle, where al-Shabab fighters had reportedly assembled to prepare attacks.
NISA said repeated strikes hit the group’s positions, killing 12 militants and destroying shelters and locations used to coordinate and plan attacks.
In Hiiraan’s Buq-aqable area, a separate operation destroyed what NISA described as an al-Shabab facility used to stockpile weapons gathered from Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan and Galgaduud regions.
Seven al-Shabab members were killed in the Buq-aqable operation, according to the agency, including Faruq, whom NISA identified as the person in charge of the group’s weapons cache.
“Weapons and equipment were destroyed at the facility, including two technical vehicles, two tankers and two motorcycles,” the statement added.
NISA said the raids form part of its continuing campaign against al-Shabab’s leadership, operational sites and supply routes.
