Euro 2020 came to show West Ham a glimpse of class

Few young players entered Euro 2020 with the same kind of hype as Czechs forward Adam Hlozek.

The 18-year-old Sparta Prague forward, known worldwide for his achievements in Football Manager, has been producing the goods on the pitch these days. 15 goals and eight assists in just 19 league games last year is an impressive return for all players, let alone a teenager – and now the team is taking note.

West Ham United have been afraid he could explode at Euro 2020 and have worked tirelessly to try to catch Hlozek quickly, and in their country’s 1-1 draw with Croatia we saw many reasons why they want him.

When he came off the bench, Hlozek took on more of a spark plug role for this one, and he did his best to provide it. By cutting in from the wing, he showed some excellent footwork and misleading speed to weave himself into the box, but the leading edge he showed at the club level did not transfer here.

Hlozek provides a level of excitement that is not always visible on David Moyes’ side. He is direct and loves to run against opponents, determined to create chances even when there seems to be no room for him.

He has excellent vision when it comes to the channels and makes runs that help both himself and his teammates. As his numbers at Sparta show, he is always in the right place to either score or help, and in a West Ham team that does not have many out-and-out goal scorers either on the wing or up, that could be the key.

While his favored style of play fits a minor edge, Hlozek mixes impressive size and physique into his game. The 6’1 striker is ready to throw his body when needed, and while he still has some physical maturity to do, he looks to be able to stay in the Premier League.

His attacking input is all well and good, but Hlozek is not afraid to track down either. He is by no means an elite defender, but he puts in the work. He’s not a luxury player.

West Ham hope to stay at the top of the queue for Hlozek’s signature, but a deep run in the tournament for the Czechs could prevent that. Scouts from all over Europe are already watching Hlozek and will no doubt keep an eye on him this summer.

If he can continue his exciting development in Euro 2020, expect more interest in Hlozek than already exists. If you are convinced of West Ham, hope your club makes a move soon.
