The new army chief Assimi Goita issued an official statement late Wednesday, saying “the political and military personalities arrested on August 18 have been released”.

However, they will “remain at the disposal of the court if necessary”.

Former National Assembly speaker Moussa Timbine was among those released, as were eight generals.

The rebels set up a president and a transitional government while retaining power.

A transitional government tasked with bringing Mali back to civilian rule was appointed on Monday, with many members of the junta occupying key positions, including Goita as vice president.

West African regional bloc ECOWAS on Tuesday lifted its harsh sanctions against Mali after recording “remarkable progress towards constitutional normalization”.

The group of 15 nations called for the release of civilians and military personnel detained during the bloodless coup.

ECOWAS has also demanded the dissolution of the junta calling itself the National Council for the Salvation of the People.
