In a statement released Friday, AFRICOM said the strikes hit targets in the Golis Mountains, about 55 to 75 kilometers (34 to 47 miles) southeast of the port city of Bossaso in northeastern Somalia.

AFRICOM said the mission was intended to weaken ISIS-Somalia’s capacity to plan and launch attacks that could endanger the U.S. homeland, American troops and U.S. citizens overseas.

The U.S. military did not reveal which units or assets took part in the operation, citing operational security concerns.

Somali authorities have frequently worked alongside U.S. forces against militant groups active in the country, including al-Shabab and ISIS-Somalia. The Golis Mountains have for years been regarded as a base for ISIS-Somalia, which is largely active in the semi-autonomous Puntland State region.

There was no immediate word on casualties or the extent of damage from the latest strikes.
