Garowe (AX) — Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni has placed the region’s security forces on full alert, citing a mix of threats that he said range from terrorism and piracy to infiltration from within.

Addressing senior officers and troops on Monday in Qardho district, Deni said Puntland State was fighting what he called a “just war” to protect its people and its territory.
“Puntland State is waging a just war to defend its people and its land,” Deni said. “We will not give our forces wrong orders, but we expect them to carry out their duties efficiently.”
He said the administration remains focused on maintaining stability in a region that has long operated with its own security and governance arrangements. Deni warned that extremist groups, pirate networks and others seeking to penetrate security institutions posed serious risks to the state.
“I am confident that our forces are capable of defending the country and preventing anyone who causes trouble,” he said.
The president’s remarks come amid growing political and security friction in Somalia, where disputes continue between the federal government and regional administrations over constitutional amendments and the distribution of power within the federal system.
His comments also follow complaints from some members of Puntland State’s security forces after a cabinet reshuffle announced last week. Certain officers have voiced anger over what they see as unfair political power-sharing among communities, while others have pointed to delayed salaries and limited resources.
