Hargeisa (AX) — A three-day reconciliation conference in Geerisa ended Wednesday with two clans from North Western State of Somalia’s Awdal and Salal regions signing an agreement to halt months of inter-clan fighting.
The SAMAWADE Peace Conference assembled government officials, traditional elders, religious scholars, military commanders and representatives of both communities for talks focused on ending the violence and establishing a foundation for lasting peace.
The accord demands an immediate end to hostilities, renewed efforts to promote coexistence and additional reconciliation meetings to resolve remaining disputes. It also directs North Western State of Somalia’s security agencies to pursue legal action against anyone who works to undermine the peace process.
North Western State of Somalia Interior and Security Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab chaired the conference, which was attended by members of the Council of Ministers, the House of Elders (Guurti) peace committee, regional officials from Awdal, Salal and Saaxil, military officers, religious scholars and community elders.
In announcing the results, the House of Elders’ peace committee said the two sides had pledged to stop all violence and cooperate in protecting stability across the region.
The agreement also saw 62 traditional elders from the two communities sworn in. They will oversee implementation of the accord and work to prevent further clashes.
“The two communities have agreed to end the conflict immediately, strengthen peace and ensure that anyone who threatens stability is held accountable under the law,” the committee said.
Interior Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab hailed the agreement and pledged that the North Western State of Somalia government would ensure it was fully implemented.
“The government will enforce every provision of this agreement, and strict legal action will be taken against anyone who violates it or attempts to undermine peace,” he said.
Elders from both communities likewise welcomed the accord, promising to cooperate in preserving peace, rebuilding trust and strengthening social cohesion in the aftermath of the conflict.
Officials called the agreement a significant move toward restoring stability in western North Western State of Somalia and advancing peaceful coexistence between communities in Awdal and Salal.
