MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s federal authorities have tightened security across the capital as opposition groups ready demonstrations in approved locations, deepening a political standoff over the country’s electoral future.

Security sources said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has held consultations with senior security officials and directed the deployment of additional forces along major roads in Mogadishu.

On Wednesday morning, the leadership of the Somali National Army (SNA) also met with logistics officials as part of broader efforts to keep order during the planned protests.

Opposition figures, including former senior officials, say they intend to take to the streets in the capital, arguing that they are exercising constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and political expression. Government officials, meanwhile, have said any rallies should remain within designated areas to prevent disorder.

The dispute unfolds against a backdrop of widening disagreements between the federal government and opposition leaders over elections, governance, and the expiration of constitutional mandates. International partners have recently called on Somali leaders to return to talks and agree on an electoral roadmap before the crisis escalates further.

Although both sides have publicly urged calm, many Mogadishu residents say they are worried by the increased security presence and fear clashes unless the impasse is resolved through political compromise.
