Mogadishu (AX) — Somalia on Monday sharply denounced drone strikes aimed at Saudi Arabia after Riyadh said it had intercepted and destroyed three drones that entered its airspace from Iraq.

In a statement issued Monday, the Federal Government of Somalia called the incident a grave breach of Saudi sovereignty and warned that such attacks could undermine peace and stability across the region. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense said the drones were stopped on Sunday morning after crossing into the kingdom’s airspace from Iraq.
Somalia said it fully stands with Saudi Arabia and backs any steps taken by the kingdom to safeguard its security, stability and territorial integrity.
“The Federal Republic of Somalia strongly condemns the drone attacks targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the statement said, noting that attacks on states and critical infrastructure can fuel further escalation in an already fragile region.
Saudi Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki said the kingdom would take the operational measures needed to confront any attempt to violate its sovereignty and security. He added that Saudi Arabia would also move to protect citizens and residents on its territory.
Somalia urged restraint, respect for international law and renewed efforts to preserve security and stability throughout the region.
The episode comes at a time of heightened Middle East tensions, with months of confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States. A U.S.-Iran ceasefire took effect in April after Pakistani mediation, though disputes over the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional security have persisted.
Somalia and Saudi Arabia maintain close diplomatic relations through the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other regional forums. Mogadishu has repeatedly voiced support for Saudi Arabia’s security during periods of tension in the Gulf.
