Somalia: Security Forces Surround Residence of Dismissed General

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali federal forces have cordoned off the Mogadishu home of Gen. Mahad Abdirahman Aden, known as “Shub,” after his abrupt ouster as head of the Custodial Corps.

Axadle confirmed that Somali Police Force units took up positions outside the residence shortly after the Council of Ministers announced his dismissal on Wednesday.

The deployment came on the heels of an extraordinary cabinet meeting in which Maj. Gen. Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud was appointed as Gen. Mahad’s successor.

Authorities also stripped Gen. Mahad of his Custodial Corps–assigned protection, formally withdrawing his personal security detail.

Officials have not publicly stated the rationale for the security posture, but the move is widely viewed as an effort to track and curtail the former commander’s movements following his removal, which was reportedly tied to his political alignment with South West State President Abdiaziz Laftagareen.

The federal government has yet to comment on the operation. Security analysts say the show of force is likely intended to guarantee a controlled handover to the newly appointed chief, Maj. Gen. Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud.
