Mogadishu (AX) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday opened the new headquarters of the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport, placing fresh emphasis on the government’s push to turn the maritime sector into a pillar of economic growth.

Addressing the ceremony in Mogadishu, the president said the federal government is giving priority to upgrading ports, reinforcing maritime security and safeguarding marine resources as part of a broader effort to support long-term national development.
“The Federal Government of Somalia is committed to making the Somali Sea the backbone of the country’s economic growth,” Hassan Sheikh said. He added that protecting maritime security, managing natural resources and preserving the marine environment for future generations remain central to that vision.
Officials say the new ministry headquarters should improve institutional capacity and help expand maritime trade, a vital part of Somalia’s economy because of the country’s long coastline and position along major international shipping routes.
While at the facility, the president inspected different sections of the building and commended ministry staff for their work in improving essential services and strengthening maritime governance.
The move comes as Somalia continues efforts to deepen its links with global markets and rebuild critical infrastructure after decades of conflict, with authorities increasingly turning to the economic promise of the country’s maritime domain.
