MOGADISHU, Somalia — In a swift reshuffle aimed at tightening control over Somalia’s security apparatus, the Council of Ministers on Wednesday approved Maj. Gen. Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud as the new chief of the Somali Custodial Corps during an extraordinary session led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

Acting on a recommendation from the Ministry of Justice, the cabinet’s decision takes immediate effect and removes the former chief, Gen. Mahad Abdirahman, known as “Shub.”

Gen. Mahad’s ouster follows reports linking him to political currents in South West State, where he is the father-in-law of regional president Abdiaziz Laftagareen. Sources indicate his visible backing of the South West administration amid recent tensions with the federal government was a key factor in the move.

Maj. Gen. Hamud, a seasoned security figure, previously served as a government minister and held the top posts of the Somali Police Force and the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), experience that positions him to steer the nation’s correctional system.

Prime Minister Barre said the leadership change forms part of a broader push to bolster governance and transparency across the country’s correctional services.

Analysts view the appointment as a decisive effort by the federal government to reassert command over national security institutions, as constitutional and political disputes with several regional member states continue to simmer.
