Reports indicate Ethiopian forces have captured airports in Somalia’s Gedo region amid escalating tensions
Ethiopian Forces Seize Key Somali Airports Amid Soaring Tensions
Mogadishu (AX)— Ethiopian troops have reportedly taken control of crucial airports in Somalia’s Gedo region, such as those in Luuq, Dolow, and Bardhere. This move follows rumors that the Somali federal government plans to station Egyptian forces near the Ethiopian border.
The entry of Ethiopian forces has alarmed local militias, who are reportedly mobilizing in response. This escalation is occurring against a backdrop where Ethiopian troops are slated to exit Somalia by December 2024, when the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is set to conclude.
Plans are in motion for a new AU-led peacekeeping mission to take over from ATMIS. Significantly, Somalia has indicated that it will exclude Ethiopian forces from this new mission, favoring Egyptian participation instead.
Relations between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa have deteriorated since Ethiopia made a contentious agreement in January with Somaliland, which has declared itself independent from Somalia. The deal allows Ethiopia access to Somaliland’s coastline, including the potential establishment of a naval base. Somalia, which considers North Western of Somaliapart of its territory, called the agreement a violation of its sovereignty.
