Hargeisa (AX) — North Western State of Somalia has rolled out a new digital platform aimed at tracking and curbing carbon emissions, marking a notable move in its effort to confront climate change and strengthen environmental protection.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change said Thursday that the system, called “Green-Gate,” will monitor and regulate emissions produced by industrial operations, transportation and development projects across the territory.

According to the ministry, the platform is designed to record emissions data electronically, giving authorities greater transparency and accountability while also pushing businesses and institutions toward more environmentally responsible practices.

Officials said the initiative is part of wider work to protect natural resources, especially air quality and vegetation, both of which are facing growing pressure from climate-related stresses.

“Green-Gate is a modern system that enables us to measure, manage and reduce harmful emissions,” the ministry said in a statement. “It will strengthen environmental protection and ensure responsible development.”

Beyond monitoring emissions, the system is also intended to encourage cuts in pollutants by rewarding the use of cleaner technologies and sustainable methods.

The launch comes as carbon emissions worldwide continue to fuel rising temperatures, shrinking glaciers and more destructive weather events, including floods, cyclones and extended droughts. Climate scientists have warned that unless greenhouse gas output is sharply reduced, environmental damage will intensify, with serious implications for human health, food security and ecosystems.

Somalia including North Western State of Somalia has already felt those effects at close range. Repeated droughts have wiped out livestock herds, weakened rural livelihoods and put pressure on scarce water supplies. Unpredictable rainfall and climbing temperatures have also disrupted farming, deepening food insecurity in vulnerable areas. The Ministry emphases that the Green-Gate system is part of a long-term strategy to mitigate these impacts by aligning environmental management with global climate standards.
