A man convicted of defiling a 13-year-old Grade 7 pupil after allegedly luring her away from home and moving her across two counties has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Garissa court.
Senior Resident Magistrate Njoki imposed the sentence after finding the accused guilty under the Sexual Offences Act.
“The man was found guilty of the offence of defilement contrary to section 8(1) as read with section 8(1)(4) of the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006,” read a statement by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The offences were committed between February 6 and March 11, 2026, in Garissa and subsequently in Lamu County, the court heard.
The ODPP said the accused encountered the girl after her aunt sent her to a nearby shop in Garissa’s Ziwani area.
He allegedly took her first to the Millimani area of Garissa and later moved her to Witu in Lamu County, where the court heard she was repeatedly defiled.
Investigators told the court that the places to which the girl was taken were connected to relatives of the accused.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers arrested the suspect on March 13, 2026, ending the girl’s captivity.
In delivering the sentence, Magistrate Njoki noted that the accused was a first-time offender with no previous criminal record before handing down the 20-year prison term.
The convict has 14 days to appeal the sentence.
