Jubaland Leader Walks Out of Key NCC Gathering in Somalia’s Capital

Jubaland Leader Creates Buzz by Exiting NCC Gathering in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting held in Mogadishu hit a snag as Jubaland’s chief, Ahmed Islam Mohamed Madobe, vigorously opposed the act of simply approving term extensions without scrutiny. He urged the leadership to uphold ethical standards and transparency.

On the NCC’s concluding day, Madobe was spotted at Aden Adde International Airport, making his way to Kismayo after denouncing the controversial extension proposed by Villa Somalia. Insiders informed Axadle of the breakdown in talks between federal and state authorities.

Attempts to halt Madobe’s swift departure did not pan out, even after PM Hamza Abdi Barre allegedly dispatched a delegate late into the night. The message was clear: if the plan crumbles, so does his tenure. Yet, Madobe stood his ground, refusing to support the proposed constitutional amendments.

Voices from the past, including former Somali leaders Sheikh Sharif, Hassan Ali Khaire, and Abdirahman Abdishakur, expressed disapproval of the derailed negotiations in Mogadishu. They criticized President Hassan Sheikh for unlawfully pursuing a term extension, pledging to resist through lawful channels.

These leaders remain firm against any term extension previously dismissed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. They claim Hassan Sheikh is misleading citizens with talks of “one person, one vote,” while covertly seeking to extend his reign.

President Hassan Sheikh faces challenges maintaining good rapport with member states, as regional leaders accuse him of destabilizing federalism. Despite his push for a one-person-one-vote system, resistance from several regional leaders persists.

Critics warn that this approach could disrupt the electoral process, inadvertently leading to a term extension. While in opposition, Hassan Sheikh often criticized former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, known as Farmajo, for similar plots. Ironically, under his leadership, Hassan Sheikh is seen as disregarding constitutional principles.

As a pivotal figure of the National Consultative Council, Madobe’s dramatic exit signifies the failure of discussions, potentially stirring chaos in the nation.
