London (AX) — Two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, in an incident police are treating as a terrorist attack.
The men, identified as 34-year-old Shilome Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Ben Baila, who was known locally as Moshe Shine, were targeted on Wednesday in what authorities believe was an antisemitic attack.
The attack took place in Golders Green, a neighbourhood in north London with a large Jewish community.
Police said a 45-year-old British national born in Somalia was Tasered and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody. Officers confirmed that the suspect entered the United Kingdom legally as a child.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the suspect has a history of serious violence and mental health issues. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley also said investigators are examining the suspect’s background and earlier incidents, including an alleged altercation in south-east London earlier the same day.
The Metropolitan Police Service said counterterrorism officers are leading the investigation and are also searching an address linked to the suspect.
Police reported that during the arrest, officers feared the suspect was carrying an explosive device and deployed a Taser as he allegedly attempted to continue the attack. No officers were injured.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, calling it a “deeply appalling anti-Semitic attack,” and said that “attacks against the Jewish community are attacks against Britain.”
A significant police presence remains in the area as investigations continue, with authorities describing the case as a serious counterterrorism matter.
