Minneapolis (AX) — U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar has officially entered the race for another term in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, setting up a bid to continue representing Minneapolis and a ring of nearby suburbs.

The Democrat, who has emerged as one of the most recognizable progressive figures in Congress, confirmed the filing in a Facebook video posted Saturday.

“I am excited to file to continue to run for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, and we hope to see you on the campaign trail. Happy filing day,” Omar said.

Omar has held the seat since 2019, serving a district that includes Minneapolis as well as communities such as Brooklyn Center, St. Louis Park and Richfield.

Federal Election Commission records identify Omar as a 2026 candidate for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, and election trackers indicate she is competing in the Democratic primary set for Aug. 11, 2026.

Her campaign is expected to attract close attention well beyond Minnesota. Omar has remained a prominent figure in state and national politics, both for her place in the Democratic Party’s progressive wing and for her regular confrontations with Republican lawmakers.

In the 2024 general election, Omar won a fourth term in Congress with ease, defeating Republican challenger Dalia al-Aqidi by more than 50 percentage points. Omar captured roughly 75% of the vote, while al-Aqidi received about 23%.
