Security sources said ISIS militants struck a vehicle belonging to Golis Telecom as it moved through the area. A fifth victim, a soldier with the Puntland State Dervish forces, was badly wounded and is said to be in critical condition.
The attack took place while the company was working to restore communications services in Calmiskaad after earlier bombings had destroyed key infrastructure, including a local telecommunications site.
Officials said the explosion underscores ISIS’s continuing foothold in the mountainous terrain, despite repeated assertions from Puntland State authorities that the group has been sharply weakened.
The latest attack came just days after airstrikes reportedly killed several ISIS fighters accused of coordinating bombings and erecting roadblocks across the region.
Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni has vowed to step up military operations against militant groups, including ISIS and Al-Shabaab, as part of a broader push to stabilize the area.
