In a tragic escalation of violence, a drone strike on the town of Kutum in Sudan’s North Darfur resulted in the deaths of at least 12 civilians, including six children. This incident was reported by a medical source on Thursday.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, highlights a recent surge in drone warfare between Sudan’s military forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), locked in conflict since April 2023.

Among the victims were three female secondary school students, as detailed by the medical source who spoke to Agence France-Presse (AFP) under the condition of anonymity due to security concerns. The strike left 16 others wounded, consisting of women and children who are currently being treated.
Responsibility for the assault was attributed to the Sudanese army by the el-Fasher Resistance Committee, a group advocating for democracy. They reported that the al-Salama neighborhood, situated near the al-Um Girls’ School, was directly impacted.
The United Nations, just last week, expressed alarm at the mounting toll of drone strikes, which have claimed the lives of over 500 civilians from January to mid-March alone. The UN emphasized the severe consequences of using high-tech, cost-effective weaponry in densely populated regions.
This prolonged conflict, now approaching its third year, has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities, displaced over 11 million people, and precipitated what the UN describes as the globe’s most significant crisis of displacement and hunger.
