AU deeply concerned by Mogadishu clashes, urges restraint in Somalia
The AU said Somali stakeholders should settle their disputes through dialogue and the country’s constitutional mechanisms, not through force.
ADDIS ABABA — The African Union Commission said Thursday it was deeply alarmed by the latest security developments in Mogadishu, where armed clashes have broken out in civilian neighborhoods, and it called on political actors to end the violence at once.
In a statement released from its headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Commission urged “all parties to immediately stop the fighting and exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians, and refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions.”

The warning comes amid intensifying political strain in Somalia, with recent gun battles in the capital prompting strong criticism from regional leaders and opposition figures alike.
The AU said Somali stakeholders should settle their disputes through dialogue and the country’s constitutional mechanisms, not through force.
It also welcomed continued efforts by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other political actors to advance national dialogue, reconciliation, and consensus-building as a path to lasting stability.
The Commission said it would keep a close watch on developments on the ground.
It also reiterated that its Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) remains ready to “continue to render full support towards the restoration of peace and security” in the troubled Horn of Africa nation.
