More than 150 people became ill after swimming in the sea on Sunday, in Ténès, on the Mediterranean coast, 200 kilometers west of Algiers.

Many families had gathered on Sunday 4 July on the beach in Ténès on the Mediterranean coast for the opening of the summer season. By the end of the afternoon, dozens of swimmers began vomiting, vomiting or complaining of headaches.

Rescue services rush into the water to help them. More than thirty of them, including professional divers, are in turn poisoned.

Marine pollution?

A total of 149 people were cared for on Sunday at Zighoud Youssef Hospital in Ténès, a city 200 kilometers west of Algiers. All have been released since then.

Poisoning caused by algae or marine pollution linked to a chemical spilled offshore from a boat or on land? An investigation has been initiated. The Department of the Environment and the National Coastal Commission have taken samples. The samples are analyzed. The results must be announced within a week.
