Finnish prosecutors have charged a man with the sexual abuse of 361 children through social media, in a case the National Prosecution Authority described on Wednesday.

According to the authority, the alleged offences took place between 2019 and 2022 and involved victims between the ages of nine and 15.

Finnish police said in December that they were investigating the same case and suspected a 27-year-old man of 364 sexual offences against children.

But the Prosecution Authority said today that prosecutors had chosen not to pursue charges in three of those cases.

Investigators said the man approached the children on Snapchat, urging them to take and send photos or videos of themselves wearing little clothing or none at all.

Police said he also asked them to carry out sexual acts.

The prosecutor said the most serious charges include aggravated sexual abuse of children, sexual abuse of children, and aggravated distribution of an image depicting children in a sexual manner.

During the investigation, the man admitted to some of the offences, authorities said.

The Prosecution Authority said the trial is due to begin in September.
