Wimbledon Glory: Raducanu Draws Inspiration from England’s Gritty Triumph at Euro 2024

Emma Raducanu found inspiration in England’s gritty comeback against Slovakia at Euro 2024 right before her initial match at Wimbledon.

An unforeseen advantage graced Raducanu on Monday when Ekaterina Alexandrova, ranked 22nd worldwide, withdrew ill, altering the tournament’s dynamics.

Despite a shaky performance, Raducanu triumphed over Renata Zarazua 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 on the revered Centre Court.

Yet, Raducanu clinched victory, echoing the manner of Gareth Southgate’s crew. England, thanks to Jude Bellingham’s splendid goal and Harry Kane’s pivotal header, snagged an added-time victory against Slovakia, despite lacking flair.

Raducanu opined that England’s advance to Euro 2024’s quarter-finals epitomizes the essence of “winning ugly” as a viable strategy.

“The jitters were visible in my play, but victory demands grit,” Raducanu confessed, having donned an England jersey during Sunday’s practice.

“Catching the match on Sunday, it struck me: even a scrappy win counts.”

Raducanu hinted that the last-minute opponent swap was less than ideal.

“I’d been prepping for days against players of similar style, then suddenly, I had to switch gears,” she shared.

Adjusting took a minute, yet the support during pivotal moments was heartening. “Returning here has been exhilarating,” she added.

Looking ahead, Raducanu is set to square off against Elise Mertens. Advancing has her ecstatic as she continues her robust run on grass this season.

“Victory in the first round was my moonshot, and I’m truly elated,” the 21-year-old remarked.

“Being part of the tournament, soaking in the atmosphere—I’m just basking in it all,” she beamed.
