Foden Urges Accountability Among Players for England’s Disappointing Euro 2024 Showings

Phil Foden asserts that England’s squad should own up to their shortcomings at Euro 2024.

The team has struggled, barely advancing past Slovakia in the last 16 thanks to Jude Bellingham’s dramatic overhead kick.

In the subsequent extra time, Harry Kane’s header sealed a turnaround, yet the squad’s performance remains lackluster.

Despite Gareth Southgate bearing the brunt of criticism as he approaches his 100th game against Switzerland, Foden emphasizes the accountability lies with the players.

“The responsibility partly falls on us,” admitted Foden.

“It’s crucial for some leaders to emerge and pinpoint the disconnect.

“The gaffer can only do so much. He organizes the play and instructs on the press. The players must figure things out on the field.

“Gareth deserves better. He’s been drilling us to press intensely and maintain our formation. At times, the initiative must originate from us.

“We need more leadership during matches to collectively troubleshoot and devise solutions.

“Lately, we’ve discussed this more intensely. Should the problem recur, we’re prepared to huddle, analyze the flaws, and adjust our strategy,” Foden elaborated.

Reaching this milestone, Southgate becomes only the third manager to manage 100 matches for England. Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey are his predecessors.

Under Southgate’s guidance, England has consistently reached the quarter-finals in their last four major tournaments—a first for the team at consecutive Euros/World Cups.

Their track record in the Euro quarter-finals shows mixed results, often culminating in penalty shootouts.
