Frank de Boer resigns as manager in the Netherlands

Frank de Boer has left his role as Dutch manager after their shock 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of Euro 2020.

The Orange were left stunned on Sunday when goals from Tomas Holes and Patrik Schick dropped them from this summer’s European Championships after Matthijs de Ligt sent them out.

The former Ajax, Inter and Crystal Palace boss was appointed in the autumn of 2020 and was expected to oversee the country’s performances at Euro 2020 and the World Cup in Qatar next year.

It was then revealed that De Boer would be evaluated if he failed to reach at least the last eight in Euro 2020. However, the 51-year-old has decided to leave his position even before the evaluation took place and ended a 15-match reign as Dutch boss.

The Dutch official website revealed the news and quotes De Boer as saying: “While waiting for the evaluation, I decided not to continue as national coach.

“The goal has not been achieved, it is clear. When I was contacted to become national coach in 2020, I thought it was an honor and a challenge, but I was also aware of the pressure that would come directly from my appointment.

“That pressure is only increasing now, and it is not a healthy situation for me, nor for the selection that leads to such an important game for Dutch football on the way to the World Cup qualifiers. I want to thank everyone, obviously the fans and the players. Compliments also to the management who have created a real top sports climate here on Campus. “

The announcement leaves the Netherlands without a hassle ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Norway, Montenegro and Turkey in September. However, the football director of the Royal Dutch Football Association has confirmed that they will be looking for a candidate to succeed De Boer as soon as possible.

“Despite all of Frank’s efforts, the goal of reaching at least the quarterfinals has not been achieved. The choice of Frank turned out differently than we had hoped,” said Hogoma.

“I must now find a successor, after a good internal consultation. It’s in a hurry, because on September 1 we will play the important qualifier against Norway in Oslo. We will now evaluate more, broader than the coach alone, sharpen profile, do the work that can expected of us here. “
