Anthony Martial expected to miss the Brighton collision and doubtful to face Granada

Anthony Martial is expected to be absent for Manchester United’s Premier League match with Brighton on Sunday night.

The forward picked up a knee problem when he played for France during their 2-0 victory over Kazakhstan, got his buds stuck in the lawn and received treatment for a few minutes.

The former Monaco star was eventually replaced by Kylian Mbappe just before the hour and United were waiting for clarification of the injury.

L’Equipe now says the 25-year-old will not be ready to face the Seagulls this weekend and is also in doubt for the next Europa League match against Granada next week. The Red Devils’ next match after these two is a trip to Tottenham, which could be a more realistic return date if he misses the next two matches.

Martial has been fighting for consistency throughout the 2020/21 season. After succeeding with 17 Premier League goals last semester, the Frenchman has collected just four this time, even though his side is in second place in England’s top flight regardless of his production.

Martial’s potential absence gives manager Ole Gunnar Solskjär a large selection field for the weekend.

Mason Greenwood was lost due to injury during the international break, while Marcus Rashford also had to withdraw from the English squad with a foot problem he has had. Juan Mata is also recovering from a muscle problem.

Daniel James made Wales the winner against the Czech Republic and could start on the right against Brighton, while Paul Pogba could also be used in a more offensive position due to the lack of alternatives. Edinson Cavani would be the likely candidate to start in front with the main goal threat Bruno Fernandes in role number ten.

United have 14 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and one point ahead of Leicester as they look to improve on last season’s third place.
