In a stark warning about the state of Liberia’s democracy, former President George M. Weah has leveled serious accusations against President Joseph Boakai’s administration, claiming it is systematically undermining the rule of law. In a recent meeting with Nicola Clase, Chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, Weah outlined a series of alleged violations perpetrated by the current government. Among these, he pointed to an outright disregard for Supreme Court rulings, incidents of police brutality, and what he termed the politically motivated arrests and prosecutions of former officials.
Weah recounted a particularly harrowing experience from 2024, during which his aircraft was inexplicably denied landing rights at the international airport despite being in Liberian airspace. He characterized this incident as a blatant threat to both his safety and that of his entourage.

In light of these alarming developments, Weah called on the international community to recognize these “transgressions” as critical indicators of a potential backslide in the democratic achievements Liberia has fought hard to secure.
