Speaking for the opposition bloc, former MP Abdirahman Dheere said the group is still weighing the invitation and has yet to arrive at a final stance.
“Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sent an invitation, and we are still considering how to respond. We believe he is not sincere and may have other intentions, but we have not yet made a final decision,” Dheere said.
He said the council’s recent gatherings are part of a wider effort to craft an alternative electoral framework, one it intends to put before the Somali public.
Dheere added that internal discussions are continuing and that the council is expected in the coming days to disclose both its proposed electoral model and its official answer to the president’s invitation.
President Hassan Sheikh recently extended an invitation to the Somali Future Council for a high-level meeting set for May 10 in Mogadishu. According to the presidency, the initiative came after consultations with a range of sectors of society and will center on major national issues, including Somalia’s political future and the electoral process.
The planned talks have already drawn support from international partners. The United Nations, the United Kingdom, and the European Union have all welcomed the initiative, urging the federal government and opposition groups to enter dialogue and build consensus on how to resolve their differences.
The latest developments come as political tensions continue to rise ahead of the president’s term expiring on May 15, with no agreement yet in place on the electoral model or timetable.
