Sudan Recalls Envoy, Accuses Ethiopia of Involvement in Conflict

Sudan has taken decisive diplomatic action by recalling its ambassador to Ethiopia, escalating tensions after accusing Ethiopia and the UAE of involvement in a drone strike on Khartoum’s airport. The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem during a press briefing in the capital.

“The recall of our ambassador is due to the Emirati-Ethiopian drone aggression against Khartoum airport,” Salem stated. He emphasized that the airport is a civilian hub and such an attack contravenes international law.

Investigations Point to Ethiopia

According to Salem, there is “conclusive evidence” indicating the drones originated from Ethiopian territory. He expressed disappointment, stressing that Ethiopia “should be a sister country” to Sudan. Diplomatic messages have been sent to both Ethiopia and the UAE, though details remain undisclosed.

Sudan has firmly placed responsibility for the assault on both nations, asserting its right to respond accordingly. Neither Ethiopia nor the UAE has issued immediate statements, though the UAE has previously denied any involvement, expressing support for Sudan’s stability.

Security Measures Engaged

The drone incursion led to Sudanese air defenses engaging multiple targets in Khartoum, eyewitnesses observed smoke near the eastern airport vicinity. Authorities confirmed that airport operations resumed shortly after security protocols were enacted, without significant damage reported.

A History of Tensions

This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened suspicion, as Sudan severed diplomatic ties with the UAE in May 2025, citing arms support allegedly provided to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) engaged in ongoing conflict with the Sudanese military since April 2023.

Salem highlighted the global concern over mercenary involvement in the conflict, urging international intervention. The turmoil, rooted in a struggle over military integration, has led to a humanitarian disaster with tens of thousands dead, millions displaced, and widespread famine.
