A coalition of jihadist and separatist factions launched a significant offensive across the nation, targeting key military installations and urban areas, extending from the northern regions all the way to the capital. This marked one of the most notable escalations in recent history.

In a statement, Mali’s armed forces confirmed that counter-operations are currently in progress, asserting that the situation remains “under control.” Yakubu Mohammed, reporting for Premium Times, emphasized that analysts warn against hasty assumptions regarding a potential collapse of the state. Amid the extensive nature of these attacks, there remains no concrete evidence suggesting an imminent disintegration of Malian governance.
This surge in violence occurs within a broader context of destabilization throughout the Sahel region. According to a February Security Brief from the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, authored by Fatai Alli, irregular armed groups in West Africa have adeptly capitalized on weaknesses in military structuring, highlighting a pressing need for enhanced integration of mobility, intelligence, and support capabilities within African counterinsurgency efforts.
