Portia “Posh” Anyamba, a retired brigadier general of the South African Air Force, was sentenced to six months behind bars in the United States after admitting guilt to charges that she operated as an unregistered foreign agent for South Africa and falsified information on a U.S. security clearance form. The sentence follows her guilty plea in a U.S. court, where prosecutors said her actions violated federal statutes aimed at ensuring transparent foreign lobbying and integrity in security screening.
In her plea agreement, Anyamba acknowledged accepting cash payments and a laptop from an official of the South African State Security Agency (SSA) in return for following directives from that official. Those directives, the agreement says, included participating in think tank–style events and preparing reports to be sent back to South African officials, activities the government characterized as work on behalf of a foreign power without proper registration.
