Somali Prime Minister Commits to Direct Elections, Rejects Indirect Voting

Somali PM Assures No Return to Indirect Elections, Commits to Direct Voting

In Mogadishu, Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre vows that Somalia will not go back to the old ways of holding elections through indirect methods at the Afisyoni tent in Aden Adde Airport.

During a speech in Mogadishu, PM Barre stressed that they are actively working on creating a system where citizens can directly participate in electing their leaders.

“We are completely open about this; we are not trying to trick anyone. Our goal is straightforward, and we are dedicated to ensuring that going back to the tent is off the table for us. Those who support the old system need to understand the challenges we faced in the previous election. It is our responsibility to prevent a return to the conditions of 2022,” he stated.

The parliament recently approved plans to revamp Somalia’s electoral process, bringing back universal suffrage after extensive discussions.

Last March, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud vowed to abolish the complex clan-based indirect voting method that has been in place for over fifty years in the tumultuous Horn of Africa nation.
