Kenyan Judge Hands 30-Year Prison Term to Al-Shabaab Operative

Nairobi (AX) — A Busia tribunal has handed Jackton Jacob Kanoti, who also goes by Abdul Hakim, a 30-year sentence for his affiliation with the jihadist factions Al-Shabaab and ISIS.

Kanoti got nabbed in Siaya township in December 2021. Authorities found him with paraphernalia linked to nefarious operations. After an exhaustive two-and-a-half-year trial, the court reached its verdict. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) noted that Kanoti accessed sinister content via his phone, including Telegram group videos and chats.

“The court concluded unequivocally that the prosecution’s evidence was genuine and coherent enough to warrant conviction,” reported the DCI.

This trial and conviction fit into Kenya’s broader mission to stamp out militant threat. During a March summit with top brass in Narok, the President reaffirmed his determination to bring stability and peace. Similar apprehensions have been made lately.

Kenya grapples with ongoing strife from militant outfits, notably from Al-Shabaab. This group has posed a relentless danger since Kenya initiated operations against them in Somalia back in 2011.
