Election talks in Somalia between FGS and FMS were suspended due to division

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The highly anticipated talks before the election between the federal government of Somalia and the federal states collapsed, Axadlehas learned in the latest twist, which further shows a deep-rooted political crisis that could throw the country into chaos.

Today [Tuesday], FGS and FMS leaders were expected to hold a meeting at Halane Base Camp in Mogadishu, which the international community would have mediated, which has pushed for reconciliation in the Horn of Africa.

Sources said Tuesday’s meeting has since flopped contrary to expectations that it should take place, with some other sources noting that the talks had failed, something that would further hurt reconciliation efforts in Somalia.

Over the weekend, there were signs that the political crisis would be resolved amicably after FMS leaders met and discussed substantive issues. Jubaland and Northeastern State have often lamented that Mogadishu is not ready to resolve the election crisis.

Sources close to the federal leadership on Tuesday told Axadlethat President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is reluctant to accept some of the preconditions set for him to attend the conference, as prescribed by the organizers.

Earlier in the day, the organizers put their heads together, whether to let President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo run as a presidential candidate or as president of the country. His term expired on February 8 this year.

“Glad to be invited with other international partners to meet the five FMS leaders. “We welcome the collective FMS efforts to find a compromise so that the FGS-FMS summit can continue and put Somalia on course for the September 17 election,” said UN envoy James Swan on Monday.
