Mogadishu (AX) — Somali army commandos killed 15 al-Shabab fighters and injured 20 more during a planned assault in the Farsoley area of Lower Shabelle region, military officials said Saturday.

According to an army statement, Danab commandos led the operation, targeting al-Shabab members who had been stationed in the area.

Initial reports from the scene confirmed the number of militants killed and wounded, the army said.

Somali forces also destroyed facilities and locations allegedly used by al-Shabab to coordinate and prepare attacks, the statement said.

Operations against al-Shabab will continue as part of the government’s broader push to reestablish security and stability nationwide,” the statement noted.

The army urged residents to work with security agencies and back the ongoing campaign against the militant group.

The Farsoley operation follows a series of Somali military offensives against al-Shabab across southern and central Somalia, including recent missions backed by Turkish and U.S. airstrikes.

Al-Shabab has not publicly responded to the government’s account of the operation.
