DR Congo Opposition Postpone Protest After AU Mediation Offer

Nationwide demonstrations planned by the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s opposition coalition, C64, have been pushed back to July 22, following talks led by Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who is serving as the current chair of the African Union.

C64 contends that President Félix Tshisekedi is using a proposed constitutional referendum to scrap presidential term limits and clear a path to a third term—an allegation the government rejects. In June, lawmakers approved legislation setting out the legal basis for a referendum that could usher in constitutional changes.
