AU Condemns Airport Attack in Niger as Security Tightens

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, has voiced strong condemnation of the recent armed assault on Niamey’s international airport, while also praising the rapid actions taken by Niger’s security forces to thwart the attackers.

Following the incident, Nigerien authorities took immediate steps to bolster security at key locations throughout the capital. Defense and security units cordoned off areas surrounding the presidential palace and the office of the prime minister. This incident echoes a prior attack that occurred in late January 2026, which targeted both the airport and a nearby military base.
