Generation Equality Forum (FGE) is a global gathering for gender equality held in Paris from June 30 to July 2. It was also available on the Big Island and opened on Thursday, June 17 through six themes: climate justice, technological innovation, sexual and reproductive health, or gender-based violence.

as reported from Madagascar, Laure Verneau

How to achieve gender equality in Madagascar 2030 and ensure that the results are adapted to the country? At the Generation Equality Forum, this is the question from six action coalitions on this theme. Jemisson Alexandre, 26, leads the coalition on gender-based violence. “We work to ensure that all actors, whether at government level or in civil society or other international organizations, are called upon to intervene to raise awareness of the law on gender-based violence,” he explains.

In this coalition, members of civil society but also of ministries, women’s groups and technical and financial partners to give more weight to this struggle. A specific law has already been adopted in 2019: the text contains 22 articles. But the pandemic has exacerbated this phenomenon: 77.3% of women surveyed by the United Nations Population Fund said inclusion had contributed to an increase in domestic violence. and 46% of respondents said that the Covid-19 pandemic caused aggressive behavior among family members; the majority of authors (63%) are fathers or husbands.

In this context, the country wants to strengthen its commitment through the forum, explains Rova Rabetaliana, Director General for the Advancement of Women in the Ministry of Population. “We will take into account a little more people with disabilities who are the first victims of GBV [violences basées sur le genre, NDLR]. And we will try to have our national gender equality policy … “

The commitments are planned for two deadlines: at the end of the year and in 2025.
