A Reuters video from the scene showed a police officer drawing a weapon and moving for cover as shots rang out. One person could be seen with blood on their clothing.
According to Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu, three people were involved in the shooting and were “eliminated” by Turkish police.
Koseoglu said the consulate building sits in a crowded part of the city, surrounded by businesses that include international companies, with “thousands” of people working in the area.
She added that the Israeli consulate is located on the seventh floor of a high-rise in the neighborhood.
“The eyewitness that I spoke to … he was just smoking with his colleague, and three people came in a car, tried to open a gunfire, and then the security fired them back,” Koseoglu said while reporting from Istanbul.
No Israeli diplomats are stationed at the consulate building in Istanbul, and there are also no Israeli diplomats at the embassy in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, “which means the employees who are inside those diplomatic missions are mostly the locals who are working for the consulate or embassy”, Koseoglu added.
Authorities have not yet provided any information about the attackers’ identities or their motives.
