Somalia Presidency Moves Toward Parliamentary Session as Mandate Fight Escalates
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s presidency is preparing to call the lower house of parliament into session after elections in Baidoa conclude, with Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur “Madobe” expected to run for the presidency of the South West regional administration, informed sources said Tuesday.

The proposed sitting would open the door for lawmakers to choose a new speaker of the House of the People within 30 days, even as opposition voices increasingly insist that the current parliament’s mandate ended on April 14, 2026.
The plan is expected to intensify the political standoff in Mogadishu, where opposition figures accuse the federal government of holding onto power beyond constitutional boundaries. They say parliament is functioning without a valid mandate, though no major bloc of legislators has resigned or refused to collect parliamentary salaries.
Political maneuvering has already grown sharper among allies of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud from the South West regions, as rival camps compete for influence over the leadership of what opponents call an expired legislature.
Sources familiar with the talks said several prominent figures active in South West regional politics are seeking key parliamentary posts as part of wider realignments tied to the Baidoa elections.
Meanwhile, some would-be candidates are running into pushback in their own constituencies after the latest political shifts, especially among clans in the Bay and Bakool regions, where rivalries between politicians have deepened in recent weeks.
