Somalia Hails U.S.-Iran Deal as Step Toward Peace, Regional Stability

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia on Tuesday welcomed a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, framing the accord as a constructive move that could ease tensions and bolster stability in a region vital to global commerce and security.

In a statement, Somalia’s Foreign Ministry said the understanding marked an encouraging step toward de-escalation and dialogue, and it praised both governments for turning to diplomacy to bridge their differences.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran as a positive step toward de-escalation, dialogue, and regional stability,” the ministry said.

Somalia also thanked Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for backing the diplomatic efforts that helped bring about the agreement. The government further acknowledged what it said was the role of U.S. President Donald Trump in promoting peace initiatives.

Mogadishu said it hoped the deal would be carried out in good faith and contribute to protecting civilians, safeguarding freedom of navigation, and avoiding any further rise in tensions.

The Somali government reiterated its support for diplomacy, respect for international law, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

The statement came as Somalia continued to emphasize the importance of regional stability, given its strategic position along the Gulf of Aden and close to major shipping lanes linking the Red Sea with international markets.

The Horn of Africa country said it supports all efforts aimed at advancing peace, security, and stability in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea region.
