North Western State of Somalia orders undocumented foreigners to leave within 10 days

Hargeisa (AX) — North Western State of Somalia has given undocumented foreigners 10 days to leave the country, framing the measure as part of a broader push to bolster security and preserve stability.

On Monday, State Minister for Interior Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed Magaalo said the directive had already been passed to security agencies, which he said were expected to carry it out with care.

“Security agencies are instructed to make every effort to ensure that foreigners leave the country within 10 days,” Magaalo said. “I instruct the public to report anyone they suspect to the security agencies. We are protecting our security, and it is everyone’s responsibility.”

Magaalo said the decision comes as North Western State of Somalia draws increasing international attention and anticipates more foreign investment, factors he said make security and stability even more important.

He also warned residents against taking matters into their own hands, stressing that no individual has the authority to interrogate, confront, or act against foreigners.

According to him, any issues involving foreigners without documentation fall under the jurisdiction of the government and immigration authorities.

Magaalo said foreigners who are legally living in North Western State of Somalia will not be affected by the order and are considered safe. Those who fall under the directive, he added, should leave peacefully.

The North Western State of Somalia administration has issued similar warnings before to foreigners residing in its territory without legal status.

At various times, some foreign nationals have been granted work and residence permits, while others have been told to comply with immigration rules or face deportation.
