MOGADISHU, Somalia — Major General Mohamed Sheikh Hassan on Sunday officially took charge of the Somali Custodial Corps, stepping into leadership of the country’s prison service at a handover ceremony held in Mogadishu.
The changeover unfolded without the outgoing commander, General Mahad Abdirahman, who remains under house arrest in the capital. Even so, the ceremony went ahead, with senior correctional officials and government representatives present for the transfer of command.

General Mohamed Sheikh Hassan now inherits a sensitive post at a crucial moment for the Custodial Corps, the agency responsible for overseeing high-security correctional facilities and carrying out inmate rehabilitation. His appointment followed a fallout between Villa Somalia and the Southwest state.
The Ministry of Justice has not publicly set out the exact legal basis for the former commander’s detention, and his confinement kept him from taking part in the customary handover of authority. In assuming the role, the new commander vowed to defend the rule of law and raise standards across the country’s penal institutions.
