Somali Lawmakers Gather in Kismayo to Oppose Federal Government’s Election Strategy
Somali Lawmakers Convene in Kismayo to Challenge Central Government’s Voting Proposals
KISMAYO, Somalia — Over 30 legislators from across Somalia have assembled in Kismayo, Jubbaland’s current administrative hub, to express discontent with the national government’s approach. Initially slated for Friday, the meeting was rescheduled, aiming to enhance participation, as per local broadcasts.
Organized by Jubbaland’s President, Ahmed Madobe, the convening sought to tackle growing differences between regional leaders and Mogadishu’s central authorities. Parliamentarians fervently backed Jubbaland’s stances on governance matters, alleging that the federal administration has been provoking “tribal friction” against Jubbaland and Northeastern State.
This gathering follows heated debate over the prospective 2026 electoral model introduced during a National Consultative Council (NCC) conference. Certain MPs caution that this scheme might allow President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to prolong his mandate, risking national volatility.
Drama escalated as Madobe exited the NCC dialogue, insisting on the inclusion of both Northeastern State and the SSC Khatumo territory in the discussions. His demands were prompted by Northeastern State’s refusal to partake in the NCC deliberations amid persisting disputes with federal entities.
This session underscores the complex political landscape in Somalia, where clan ties and desires for regional self-determination often conflict with federal aspirations, emphasizing the ongoing struggle to harmonize national coherence amid varied local agendas.
