Held in Hargeisa, the meeting examined the changing security picture in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, where developments in regional and international affairs continue to shape some of the world’s most important shipping lanes.
Officials said the agenda focused on identifying new threats and improving national coordination to address developments with the potential to affect both regional stability and global commerce.
North Western State of Somalia’s coastline stretches more than 850 kilometers (528 miles) along a maritime corridor central to international trade, giving the territory a strategic role in efforts to monitor and secure busy sea routes. Participants said terrorism, transnational crime and smuggling remain enduring dangers that require constant attention.
The ministry said intensifying geopolitical tensions have made maritime security even more complicated, with repercussions that extend beyond the region and into worldwide trade flows.
North Western State of Somalia also reiterated its commitment to working with regional and international partners to help protect critical sea lanes and preserve freedom of navigation. Officials said that cooperation must be grounded in international law, mutual respect and common security interests.
Participants agreed to bolster the Maritime Domain Awareness framework by deepening inter-agency coordination, widening information-sharing channels and improving responses to emerging threats.
